MIGRAIN: Assessment 2 learner response
1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep it confidential).
WWW - Tara, your unseen media text was mostly good- just a few areas to improve for future Qs. Your 20 marker was clear and your argument was established
EBI - Revise strategies for conglomerates, for q3 ensure your considering both sides of the argument
2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully (this has been posted to your exam teacher's Google Classroom). Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.
1- This question was about the unseen(worth max8). To reach a high level, I could of used difference interpretations such as how different audiences would view the media product, "Stormzy tour poster". Also showing how the different modes and language associated with different media forms communicate. Writing about media language instead to drifting away and writing about representations
2- This question was about stating 3 strategies and a benefit for each(worth max6). To reach a high level, I could of improved on my spelling and clear about my answer, such as why it is a benefit and how?
3- This question was about arguments for and against PB(worth max9). To reach a high level, I could of used consistent highly appropriate use of subject specific terminology throughout. Also because I didn't complete the question I wasn't about to write about both sides of the argument, next time maybe focus on time management?
4- This question was a how much do you agree....., this was asking if you agree with the view that media has damaging effects on audiences and to refer to Gerbner cultivation theory(worth max20) For this question I don't think there was anything I needed to improve on, but I also didn't complete this if I added a third paragraph I think I could of achieved higher marks.
3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment? You may also want to think here whether you had completed all the original blog tasks from last term before doing the assessment.
I would say 7-8/10 - I completed the blog tasks, also doing past papers and learning the mark scheme
4) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.
I wrote about it, but they weren't very clear on stating the actual benefit
5) Look at your answer for Question 3. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?
Kinda- I didn't complete it, if i worked on time management I could of gotten higher
6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 4 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.
One way this can be seen is through the use of long exposure to media. For example, audiences who regularly watch violent crime dramas or news reporting may start to believe that the world is more dangerous than it really is. This means that audiences who view media content for a long period of time may find it difficult to believe what is normal and what isn't. This indicates that heavy viewers may adopt a “mean world” perception, overestimating the prevalence of crime and danger in society. It shows how repeated exposure can shape attitudes and beliefs, influencing how audiences interpret real life situations and potentially increasing fear or anxiety, even if these perceptions are not accurate. This links to Gerbner's cultivation theory because it shows how repeated exposure to similar media content can influence audiences’ beliefs and perceptions, making them see the world as more dangerous or threatening than it actually is. This is further supported by Bandura’s social learning theory, which conveys that audiences, particularly children, may imitate aggressive behaviour seen in media content, reinforcing harmful actions. Thus, media can be seen as damaging due to long exposure, as young people and children may imitate behaviours they see on screen, particularly when these behaviours appear rewarded, which links to the social learning theory.
