Task 1: Genre Fact sheets 1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important? They help us recognise genres through repeated codes and conventions which are aspects of a text which the audience recognises as a shared character such as from specfifc visual or aural media language. Part 1: Media Factsheet reading 1) What is the definition of structuralism provided by the Factsheet?  Structuralism is a theoretical perspective that emphasises the existence of universal structure underlying the surface differences and assumed randomness of various cultures, stories and media texts. 2) What are binary oppositions and why are they important? MIGRAIN: First blog task

  1- One reason I chose Media A levels is because I am very passionate about filming such as music videos, which is my favourite media. I also found out it can be a useful subject for law as it involves essay writing. 2- No, I did not take GCSE Media Studies  3- No, I did not take GCSE Media Studies  4- A* 5- I want to complete a degree in LLB Law at a top university and hopefully do a masters in Law after that. 6- I believe the biggest media story of 2025 is the chance of world war 3 to happen.   1) What is the definition of structuralism provided by the Factsheet?  Structuralism was once a really popular way of analysing media texts. But by the 1970s, it started to break down because there were so many different approaches that it was hard to pin down one clear, coherent theory. 2) What are binary oppositions and why are they important? Binary oppositions are pairs of opposites (like good vs. evil, male vs. female, rich vs. poor) that help create meaning in stories. They’re important because they show how texts rely on contrasts to build narratives and shape how audiences understand them. 3) How do genre and auteur theory link to structuralism?  Genre theory shows how texts share common structures and codes that make them recognizable as part of a category (like horror, comedy, romance). 1) What are the preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings for the RBK 50 Cent advert? Preferred reading - 50 Cent embodies resilience, strength, and authenticity. The slogan “I am what I am” positions him as unapologetic and true to himself. The quote “there is no plan B … tomorrow is not promised” encourages audiences to live authentically, work hard, and seize opportunities. The brand (Reebok) aligns itself with 50 Cent’s image of toughness, determination, and street credibility — suggesting that wearing Reebok makes you authentic and fearless. Some viewers may admire 50 Cent’s determination but might not fully agree with the fatalistic idea of “no plan B.” They could respect his background but see it as glamorising a risky or dangerous lifestyle. TASK 1 TECHNICAL CODES CAMERAS WORK / PHOTOGRAPHIC - the camera work shows a close up of 50 cent expression of being serious which conveys his career and lifestyle.  LIGHTING - On the print the low key, high control lighting   is shining above 50 cent, making him the spotlight and the central of the ad , which presents intensity, connoting danger and seriousness The dark lighting behind 50 cent conveys black lives matter, attracts different audience for reebok, such as 50 cent's fan base and black people.
